I worked at the Edmund Rice Centre tutoring ages 8 to 23 for a variety of subjects including VCE English, VCE chemistry, years 5 to 7 English, years 5 to 7 Methods and years 7 to 10 humanities. Students developed a deeper understanding of their material and consistently scored higher on tests and SACS. I worked consistently with a small number of students with varying ages, ability levels and English abilities to help them in all subjects.

About Me
I have a Masters of Teaching (Secondary) with my specializations being English and EAL/ESL, but I am also fluent in French(both written and spoken) from my cultural background. I have had experience teaching all 3 subjects both in school settings and as a tutor. Though being a qualified Secondary teacher, I am also able to teach primary grade students if necessary. My primary goal in teaching is to empower my students with the skills to become successful and independent learners. To that end, I tailor my teaching to accommodate their current level and strengths in order to foster their growth.

About Me
Hi! I’m Oakley, and I’m a student at The University of Melbourne, currently undertaking a Graduate Diploma of Plant Science (with a previous major in Zoology, and plans to continue with a research Masters in animal behaviour or plant-animal interactions). When I’m not studying or tutoring, you’re most likely to find me out birdwatching on a sandy shore or beneath the tree ferns of Sherbrooke Forest. I’m also very partial to a sneaky game of Mario Kart. I’ve been tutoring on-and-off since 2012, and in the last one-two years have tutored higher-level biology classes, most notably with the UMSU VCE Summer School and at Medley Hall, one of Melbourne Uni’s residential colleges. I love the rewarding feeling that comes with the moment when a student grasps a concept during a tutorial – one of my most precious moments was when my student, who’d never taken a biology class before university, recited the entire process of cellular respiration back to me without a pause. As a flexible and committed individual with a real passion for life sciences, and knowing all too well the perils of having a dreadful teacher, I hope I can bring something to the table for each and every person 🙂

About Me
I have dedicated my life so far to coming to a deep understanding of the meaning of John Dewey’s dictum that, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Teaching and learning are two sides of the same coin. If education is life itself, then so is teaching. Teaching is the means through which we can inspire our fellow humans to lead fuller lives. Teaching is not just a job. It is the essence of a life lived well.
My journey to arrive at this understanding has not been straightforward. It is worth recounting my path in some detail to underline why I believe as profoundly as I do in the significance of teaching. I did not complete year 12 initially, because of a tragic disruption in my family. I left school at 15 but, demonstrating the resilience and mettle I believe has marked out my life, I travelled from Queensland and completed my Year 12 through RMIT in 1995, aged 20. Afterwards I did a number of technical college courses in fashion, design and drama, while working in television, film, advertising and communications. During this time I won several professional awards and scholarships in recognition of my effort.
By the time I was 28 I realised that I needed to go to university if I was to achieve my goal of making sense of the world and establishing a secure place within it. I enrolled in a BA at Monash University and soon understood that I could study while fulfilling my other ambition to travel. Over the next 10 years I journeyed through many countries: Iran where I wrote and drew cartoons at the height of the sanctions, Egypt where I wrote about the Arab Spring, South Africa where I wrote about entrepreneurship and leadership in the townships, Japan, South East Asia, India and China, where I explored intercultural business relations and many other countries. These events opened my world and enabled me to see that, even in difficult circumstances, people can flourish. My life was reaffirmed and my spirit refreshed.
During my travels I had become fascinated with Africa. My heart soared with the stories of freedom and opportunity in the aftermath of apartheid even when the odds still seem stacked against some. I achieved a Journalism internship at South Africa Broadcasting Corporation and I went to work there in December 2014. The next month was spent filing stories, including one on the deep mourning of Africans marking the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s death. At a commemoration one evening, I picked up a pamphlet with a prominent quote from the great man: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. It was here at this event that everything I had done finally made sense. Through travel and education I had developed a deep understanding of the importance of teaching and learning. I knew that I wanted to be a part of that world. For me, the success of a life begins and ends with education. In my 40th year I have made this pledge: I will be a leader in the most powerful, productive and transforming way anybody can: as a teacher. I am now to commence Masters of Teaching (Primary) with Monash University, Australia.

Hi guys!
My name’s Roshini. I completed VCE last year, receiving study scores of: 50 for Mathematical methods, 47 for Japanese SL, 47 for chemistry, 46 for accounting, 45 for physical education and 44.5 for Literature. I also did the UMAT, and received a score of 99. I was also the Sports Captain of my High School (The MacRobertson Girls’ High School) in year 12, and was heavily involved in the leadership, sport, social service and house program. I am currently in my first year of medicine at Monash, and this year did private tutoring for UMAT for several students and earlier on in the year worked at Kumon, teaching younger children Mathematics and English. I also currently volunteer at the Sudanese Saturday School, where I teach both primary school and secondary school-aged refugee children. I believe I have the skills and qualities to be a great tutor, and would perform any role bestowed upon me whole-heartedly and with integrity.
