About MeI have dedicated my life so far to coming to a deep understanding of the meaning of John Dewey’s dictum that, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Teaching and learning are two sides of the same coin. If education is life itself, then so is teaching. Teaching is the means through which we can inspire our fellow humans to lead fuller lives. Teaching is not just a job. It is the essence of a life lived well. My journey to arrive at this understanding has not been straightforward. It is worth recounting my path in some detail to underline why I believe as profoundly as I do in the significance of teaching. I did not complete year 12 initially, because of a tragic disruption in my family. I left school at 15 but, demonstrating the resilience and mettle I believe has marked out my life, I travelled from Queensland and completed my Year 12 through RMIT in 1995, aged 20. Afterwards I did a number of technical college courses in fashion, design and drama, while working in television, film, advertising and communications. During this time I won several professional awards and scholarships in recognition of my effort. By the time I was 28 I realised that I needed to go to university if I was to achieve my goal of making sense of the world and establishing a secure place within it. I enrolled in a BA at Monash University and soon understood that I could study while fulfilling my other ambition to travel. Over the next 10 years I journeyed through many countries: Iran where I wrote and drew cartoons at the height of the sanctions, Egypt where I wrote about the Arab Spring, South Africa where I wrote about entrepreneurship and leadership in the townships, Japan, South East Asia, India and China, where I explored intercultural business relations and many other countries. These events opened my world and enabled me to see that, even in difficult circumstances, people can flourish. My life was reaffirmed and my spirit refreshed. During my travels I had become fascinated with Africa. My heart soared with the stories of freedom and opportunity in the aftermath of apartheid even when the odds still seem stacked against some. I achieved a Journalism internship at South Africa Broadcasting Corporation and I went to work there in December 2014. The next month was spent filing stories, including one on the deep mourning of Africans marking the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s death. At a commemoration one evening, I picked up a pamphlet with a prominent quote from the great man: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. It was here at this event that everything I had done finally made sense. Through travel and education I had developed a deep understanding of the importance of teaching and learning. I knew that I wanted to be a part of that world. For me, the success of a life begins and ends with education. In my 40th year I have made this pledge: I will be a leader in the most powerful, productive and transforming way anybody can: as a teacher. I am now to commence Masters of Teaching (Primary) with Monash University, Australia. Teaching Experiencetutored for more than 10 years
