Teaching Experience

I have tutored primary school children in maths (grades 3, 4 and 7). In these teaching contexts, my main aim was increasing the children’s confidence and shift their attitudes towards a more positive mind frame in regards their mathematical ability. I found one of their major barriers towards understanding maths, was a lack of self-belief and and a disconnect to the real world. In order to remedy this, I developed more hands-on, real-world applications in order for the children to see the relevance of maths in their everyday lives.
I have also tutored primary school children in English (foundation and grade 2). For the foundation child, who came from a non-English speaking background, my focus was helping him with knowing his sight words, getting him to read and develop the basics of the foundation level English curriculum. My role also involved engaging him in conversations to help improve his verbal language skills. In regards to the child in grade 2, he required assistance in writing – he was a reluctant writer. He preferred to express his ideas through verbal means rather than in the written form. My role was to help him enjoy writing as much as he did talking through engaging and relevant writing activities.
I’ve also worked with adults as a volunteer English tutor, helping newly arrived migrants with their English language skills.
