About Me

I’m a first year bachelor of commerce student at the University of Melbourne and I completed year 12 last year at Melbourne High School with an ATAR of 97.05. I tutored a year 12 student in maths methods over this year, as well as younger student, with (so far) results we’ve both been pleased with. I’m willing to tutor primary and high school maths up to year 10 and maths methods units 1-4.
I’m also happy to tutor French, VCE students or otherwise (I received a scaled 50 for VCE French).

Teaching Experience

I regularly tutored a year 12 student in mathematical methods over 2016. Prior to the tutoring they struggled with some of the topics that had been covered in the year 11 course. As we worked through these areas their understanding improved quite a lot. As a result they were much more confident with assessment tasks and the exam than I expect they would otherwise have been.

I also tutored a year 10 student from time to time over the course of 2016 in maths. This mainly involved working through topics that they didn’t completely understand before tests, and reviewing the tests afterwards (explaining questions that had been answered incorrectly, helping them to see where their working could be more rigorous and so on).
At times it seemed that they were memorising rules without understanding the reasoning behind them, and I think this was one of the main things that they gained from the tutoring. Maths is a very logical subject and I think that it can be easier than many others but because of the sequential nature of the learning it is essential for students to have a strong understanding of the basics before moving on to more advanced topics. With both of the students, I would always be trying to identify and fill gaps in their understanding as we went through topics.
