Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) – As a mentor in a tutor squad of 4 we would go to a school (Hampton Park) once a week for over an hour and work with Indigenous students to help them with on-going school work and encourage them to consider going to university. I mostly tutored Maths (often at a year 9 level). In the times we went to the school I become aware of the effect older role models can have on younger students. We were loved by the teachers who saw the students engage more with us than the teachers themselves. We saw one student open up to wanting to be a lawyer for the first time which was a highlight.
